What the analyst said
Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter reiterated an Overweight rating and $500 price target on Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA).
“We remain Overweight, following Q4 results that missed the mark. To be fair, there were some bright spots (e.g.
19.1% EBITDA margin, >$2B free cash flow, etc.), but gross margin was an obvious miss.
It appears Tesla spent heavily on clearing outdated Model Y units from inventory, which negatively impacted pricing. But arguably, none of this matters for the thesis.
Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, Tesla isn’t backing down from a commitment to launch new products (plural) across multiple factories in 1H25, and management still expects delivery growth in 2025.
Plus, commentary re: full self-driving (FSD) software has never been so unabashedly bullish (‘…autonomy is upon us!’). Given all this, we’re not surprised the stock is trading up +4% after-hours.”
