Needham analyst Laura Martin reiterated a Buy rating and $400.00 price target on Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL).

“A common question we get from GOOGL shareholders is – Should GOOGL cut its CapX spending?

Based on the work in this report, our answer is “NO”, because: GOOGL will self-fund 100% of its CapX between FY25A and FY28E from its FCF, we calculate; Investing its “winner-take-most” economics from the last tech platform disruption (the Internet), to fund the next one (GenAI), is GOOGL’s highest ROIC option available for its FCF, we calculate; Monetizing GOOGL’s global consumer data through enterprises paying Cloud license fees and/or LLM annuity payments diversifies GOOGL’s revenue-streams away from advertising, which lowers investor risks and expands its valuation multiple, we believe; GOOGL is buying itself deeper moats as it increases CapX, because few other companies can keep up, we believe; Defensively, we believe GOOGL is hedged – Either GenAI is not disruptive, in which case GOOGL would waste 3 years of FCF but retain control of one of the largest FCF streams, or GenAI is disruptive and CapX that keeps GOOGL at the forefront allows them to solve for out-sized economics as they transition Internet products into GenAI products, (such as replacing Search links with “AI Overviews”); We believe that GenAI execution risks at GOOGL are lowest among the hyperscalers because GOOGL has already proven that it can successfully transition its historical Search-link business to AI Answers/Overviews, and this transition has been accelerating Search segment revenue growth.”
