What the analyst said

BofA Securities analyst Vivek Arya reiterated a Neutral rating and $25 price target on Intel (NASDAQ: INTC).

“Intel hosted its annual Intel Vision event this week in Las Vegas, with its new CEO LipBu Tan speaking at the opening keynote, and Intel Products CEO Michelle Johnson Holthaus and Chief Commercial Officer Christoph Schell speaking at the Products Update.

Key highlights include: 1) new CEO tone generally more realistic and long-term focused, versus prior upbeat and overpromising mgmt. style; 2) new focus on reshaping the culture and bringing back talent which it has lost over the years; 3) INTC’s key operational and financial strategies remain generally unchanged, including running Products and Foundry like two separate business lines under one Intel umbrella; 4) there were no new incremental product/roadmap/foundry/financial updates; and 5) any material change/impact could take years to show any progress.

Overall, we believe Intel is heading toward the right direction, with an improved opportunity for a turnaround under Lip-Bu’s leadership.

However, there still remain many hurdles to overcome as a subscale IDM/foundry, with increasing competitive pressure on core x86 business (from AMD and ARM) amid quickly changing demand landscape in AI.

Maintain Neutral as upside turnaround potential is balanced by competitive pressures in CPUs and a lack of a competitive AI accelerator portfolio (Gaudi3 was only compared to H100 from 2022).”
