What the analyst said
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak lowered the price target on Meta Platforms Inc.
(NASDAQ: META) to $750 (from $820) while maintaining an Overweight rating.
“Investor Sentiment has Turned Negative But META’s Revenue Runway and Innovation Underappreciated: Investor sentiment across tech continues to see-saw as companies showing GenAI innovation and revenue/EPS revisions are “AI Winners” that see multiple expansion…while those that are not showing revisions are “Behind in AI” and ”not seeing enough ROIC“ and see multiple compression.
Consider that META’s P/E multiple on consensus NTM EPS rose to as high as ~28X earlier this year…but has since fallen to ~22X NTM EPS (in line with the long-term NTM multiple).
Revenue durability, opex uncertainty and Llama foot-faults have turned META investor sentiment negative…just as GOOGL investor sentiment flipped and GOOGL’s NTM multiple premium vs META is now 33% (the highest in 3 years).
While GOOGL is impressive, this seems overdone as META remains one of a handful of companies that can leverage its leading data, distribution and investments in AI to drive earnings power and tech leadership.”
